Poems
Some
houses try to hide the fact that
children shelter there.
Ours boasts of it quite openly
The signs are everywhere...
For smears are on the windows
Little smudges on the doors;
I should apologize, I guess for toys strewn on the
floor.
But
I sat down with the children
And we played and laughed and read;
And if the doorbell doesn't shine,
Their eyes will shine instead.
For
when at times I'm forced to choose
The one job or the other...
I want to have a tidy house,
But first I'll be a mother.

I
don't wear power suits,
make speeches,
or drive a fancy sports car.
I've never talked on a car phone,
made a big sale,
or been elected to the Senate.
I don't "do lunch",
have a big impressive office
or carry a beeper.
I spend my days wiping away tears,
giving hugs,
and serving chicken nuggets.
A good day is when I go through a whole day
without a temper tantrum, bite mark
or a toilet training accident.
My "office" is a room full of brightly
colored toys
and laughing children.
You may not think that what I do is very important
and you may even whisper behind my back
"What a waste of a good mind."
But I know better.
I make a difference
because I'm changing the world
one child at a time.
Everyday I'm getting the once in a lifetime chance
to touch the future.
I'm proud to say " I'm a child care
provider".

You
love your children,
And are concerned that they learn today,
As am I, that's why I'm providing
A variety of kinds of play.
You
are asking what's the value
Of having your children play?
Your daughter's creating a tower,
She may be a builder someday.
You're
asking me the value
Of blocks and sand and clay.
Your children are solving problems,
They will use that skill everyday.
You're
saying that you don't want your son
To play in that sissy way.
He's learning to cuddle a doll,
He may be a father someday.
Your
questioning the interest centers,
They just look like useless play.
Your children are making choice,
They'll be on their own someday.
You're
worried your children aren't learning
And later they'll have to pay.
They're learning a pattern of leaning,
For they'll be learners always.
